The stag beetle is a spectacular looking insect. All males appear to have huge antlers, almost half the size again of their body. These appendages are actually over-sized mandibles, used in courtship displays and to wrestle other male beetles. They are rarely aggressive.
These creatures are serious pests that greedily devour cultivated crops. A single beetle can strip an entire farm in short order. An adult giant stag beetle is about 10 feet long.
